“Scripture says—”

“Hold on there, bro. Scripture pretty much went out the window when you dropped your money on a prostitute.”

“You think I don’t know that? You think it doesn’t eat at me to know what I did?”

“I know it does.” Just like what Carrie needed to do ate at her. “Do you still want this marriage?”

“I love Lanie.”

“I love Lanie too. But I recognize what she is.”

“What’s that, Caroline?” He closed his eyes. “What is she?”

“She’s damaged. And you’ve never dealt with whatever it is that makes her so . . . sensitive.”

“I ran away from it. But no more.”

“So let’s clean this thing up and let you move on. I trade the Sanders video for what Tuck has and you live to fight another day.”

“We don’t want to destroy Sanders,” Will said. “We just want him out of the race.”

“You did what you did, and Hal Sanders did what he did.” She took his hand. “Whose side do you think I’m going to come down on?”

“Dave said no.”

“Don’t forget what’s at stake here. Dave is on the scale with you. Dave and you on one side and that foul-mouthed bigot Sanders on the other. Do you want to add Lanie and Sophie on your side? Can you bear all that weight, Atlas?”

“Sanders has a family too.”

“Frame it bigger, then. Who is better for the country? Hal Sanders—who never saw a federal grant he could pass up? The man who subsidized abortion clinics with state funds?”

Hypocrite, she told herself even as that phrase passed her lips.

She stood, clamped her hands on his shoulders. “You and I could be in the corporate world making real money. Running Dad’s company or maybe an investment fund. Instead, you chose public service, and I followed you. We are doing this for our country. Right?”

“That—and for Dave,” Will said.

“You made Dave the man he is.”

“God made Dave the man he is.”

“You won’t pull the trigger, will you?” She shoved him. “You gutless wimp.”

“The purpose of acquiring that video was to force Sanders to withdraw. We promised Dave that’s what we would do.”

“You promised Dave. I didn’t.”

“You work for me, Caroline. And I’m saying no. We’ll find something else to feed Keyes.”

“Tucker Keyes is like a coyote with a squirrel. He’s dying to rip it open, get at those guts, howl at the sky. If you want Dave to stay viable—if you want your marriage to stay viable—I have to do this. Now.”

“You heard me, Caroline. I gave Dave my word. No.”

Her brother had been caught in a lonely limbo. How much was his fault and how much was Melanie’s—only God knew. And God would forgive whatever mess their marriage was in and Carrie would too.

Throwing his pearls before swine by letting a prostitute call him Billy? That was nearly unforgivable in her book. Nearly, but not completely.

“You want to know why you’ve got such a messed-up marriage, William Connors? Because you didn’t find the energy to fight for your family. But I will.”

She stomped out of the room.
